The emergence of the IEEE 802.16 standard, known as WiMAX, promises to provide last mile wireless broadband internet to do data-intensive applications, such as VoIP and streaming video, to Metropolitan Area Networks, as well as small urban and rural communities. WiMAX technology is considered as disturbing, is designed as an alternative to fixed line DSL and technological coaxial, and with amendments 802.16 e, the phone network as well.
